It's Sky Watch Friday again!

It might be understandable after last Friday 's posting that you thought that I only took pictures of lamps at dawn. I do indeed have more of them, but I promise you that this will be the last one - for a while. I may be having a minimalistic streak at the moment.

We had a bit of cold earlier this week, and I was fascinated by the icicles at the bottom of two of the lamps. I had hoped for a better reflection in them, but one can't have everything.

If you prefer pictures of another kind, please look at my other blog.

Have a nice week-end!

The making of a Christmas card, v. 2.0

I posted some days ago a preliminary picture for the family Christmas card. We have now moved up to version 2.0. I like it a whole lot better than the last one. The picture now has the three colours red, green and white, which a proper Norwegian Christmas card in my opinion ought to have.

Time (that is, the weather, my agenda and so forth) decides whether there ever will be a v. 3.0.

S = Sotra

What the h... is the the man up to now?

The truth is that mrsnesbitt invited to join the fun in ABC Wednesday, which this week concerns words beginning with an S.

Like with charity I like to start at home. - so Sotra is where I live.

According to Wikipedia it is like this:

Sotra is the name of two islands just west of Bergen, Norway. The main island is called Store Sotra (Big Sotra) and has an area of 176 km². Lille Sotra (Little Sotra) is the island closest to the mainland while Store Sotra (Big Sotra) lies further out. Between the two islands is the smaller island of Bildøy.

There are two municipalities at Sotra, Fjell and Sund. A third municipality, Øygarden lies north of Sotra.

The picture above is taken from Lyderhorn, one of the Bergen's seven "famous" mountains. Sotra covers as, indicated by the arrows, most of the upper part of the picture. Above that you can see the North Sea. I have indicated approximately where I live. Actually it is on the small island of Little Sotra.

I hope you'll enjoy this first entry into the world of "ABC Wednesday"!

Winter is here

We are getting the first whiffs of winter. A tiny bit of snow, the roads get icy and the cars get dented. I found this chunk once of what causes most of the problems - ice. Since I also work with various forms of crystals on a daily basis , I think it is only fitting to mark the start of winter with this.

Blog-spamming: Is it a problem?

All bloggers have seen this picture when they want to comment on anothetr blog : An image of letters called "word verification" by Google and other service providers. The practice of is meant to stop "blog-spamming", i.e. automated insertion of spam by specialised search programs. Some people use this feature - some don't. I do. I have never seen any spam getting around it, but on the other hand I haven't seen much of it anywhere else either.

I have lately been involved in a discussion about word verification: It complicates the process of commenting and may stop some people in making comments at all. Is this feature worth the cost?

My question is then: How large is the problem of blog-spamming?

Reflections from a forest in Canada?

You may have noticed that I have a weakness for pictures incorporating reflections in still water. The autumn is perfect for that, with the many colours all around. In gives a feeling of peace inside that one sometimes can sorely need.

Despite the title, the picture was not taken in Canada, but in a forest in Bergen called Canadaskogen ("The Canada forest"). I have been told that it was initially so called by a scout-master taking his underlings for excursions into the Canadian wilderness.

According to Wikipedia, "A bunad is a traditional Norwegian costume, typically of rural origin". The reason for bringing up this topic today, is that our youngest daughter is about to get one. The day has been spent at a specialist shop called "Husflidstova" at Lindås north of Bergen.

Each district in Norway has it own kind of bunad. The ones in the picture are called Nordhordlandsbunad, and my daughter is having one based on the model to the right.

It is quite complicated to make these bunads. My wife is to do her bit (she has already made most of the ones for our two eldest daughters), but most of the work on this will be done by specialists.

Then, of course, there is the accompanying jewellery in silver...

Another Sky Watch Friday

Updated version at the end!!

This time I have a small collection of pictures where the sky is a prominent element. However - I must admit that what is in the foreground usually dominates the pictures. Tell me how you feel about this!

When I first looked at this lamppost I thought that the light was still on. It wasn't. It is a reflection of the rising sun.

We have lots of lampposts, but we have also lots of herring gulls. A very common combination around here.

The gull (it is the same gull!) has now moved to the top of a chimney.

We also have crows around here. They seem to prefer another type of masts, though...

If you feel that these pictures don't quite qualify for Sky Watch Friday, please have a look at the one on my Norwegian page Runes TX-Blog. In that on there is definitely an object in the sky...

Updated version:
I caught the full moon today with a perfect sky - a seldom occurrence around here. Since it is still Friday I just couldn't wait a week for another Sky Watch Friday. So here goes:

I am sorry about the "burnout" of the moon itself, but that is a problem with digital cameras and high contrast images. Just to show you - I also have a picture of the moon itself.

However, this also shows another limitation with digital photography - noise from the CCD-chip when the ISO setting gets to high and there is little "life" in the picture.

BTW - both pictures were taken from my terrace.

My black period

A dramatic change in colour since yesterday. However, since this is mainly a photoblog, I feel that maybe the pictures get a better presentation this way. In any case - two yellow blogs are a bit too much.

I had hoped to get the picturtes a bit larger. I have increased the widths in the template t0 70 %, while reducing the sidebar to avoid collision. I can get the pictures larger by uploading from my homepage, but that is a bit long-winded. Any simple suggestions?

I include this picture of dawn in Norway, even though it is not Friday quite yet...

A new blog?

Some of you may have noticed that this Blog has changed its appearance during the afternoon. So has its Norwegian sibling, "Runes TX-Blog". It is by no means finished, but I celebrate the "new" style by a brand new and colourful picture .

More Bergen in November

Yesterday I posted a couple of stills from "Byparken" in Bergen. This time I'll try a kind of video of most of the area around "Lille Lungegaardsvann". I hope you'll like it!

Bergen in November

November is usually rainy, windy and grey in these parts. But not today. I had occasion to go down town in connection with my work, and used the opportunity to take a couple of pictures and at the same time test a new lens for my main camera.

The first shows what is called "Festplassen" ("Celebration square" in my translation), taken from across a small lake called "Lille Lungegaardsvann" (or "Smålunger'n" in the local dialect). A bit too green around the corners to be November 19?

The second shows the "new" Town Hall. it was built in the 70's and was once voted the ugliest building in Bergen by the local newspaper.

A glimpse of the sun

Today I have closed down the cottage for the season. The leaves were all gone - even the snow that came last week had (mostly) disappeared. But a rose was still around, and the lawn should have been mowed. In many ways it almost felt like it is getting close to spring again. The climate is definitely changing. Maybe that is why the sun stuck her head out for a moment?

A day for black and white

Some days give better photos in "old-fashioned" black and white than in colour. A rainy morning in November is one of them. You may be able so see a bridge in there somewhere.

My first "Sky watch Friday"

I have been invited (through GAWO) to join the net-project called "Sky watch Friday". The name of the game and the picture here should indicate what it is all about. So here is my first contribution

I caught this one last Monday and I thought that "A mushoom of smoke" would be a fitting title. This mushroom is not of nuclear origin, but is emitted by one of Norway largest hospitals!

Taking things easy...

I am at the moment editing pictures and video from a family trip to Crete last month. A week of relaxation and basking in the sun. We managed to do both.

Winter haze in November

The snow has left us, but the cold hasn't as can be seen from this picture taken this morning.

The making of a Christmas card

I am used to making my own Christmas cards, and I always use my own pictures. In "the old days" it was pictures of the children, but nowadays I try to use pictures that symbolises something of the season we now are entering - winter. Of course - pictures of this kind doesn't pop up every day, even in Norway, so I have to collect them when I see them. Here is a candidate I snapped the other day. It is a bit lacking in green, so maybe I will look around some more.

The first snow

"The first snow" is one of the pictures every amateur photographer has to snap each and every winter. Here is mine for this one.

A morning stroll

Norway is a mountainous country and has thus also quite a bit of tunnels. Some days ago I posted a picture taken from inside one end of our "local" tunnel on my Norwegian blog. This time I have taken one at other end. Just for fun.

Last year I posted a picture of some yellow fruits I found in a garden, about the size of small tomatoes (it is not an apple). I hoped somebody could tell me what they were. Nobody have, so I'll try with a new one found today. Any suggestions?

It has been suggested that I can't post without including a picture of at least one boat or ship. That may be as it will - at least here is today's contribution: A fishing vessel passing beneath Sotra bridge (Sotrabroen).

The first frost

Yesterday was the first day of "winter" for me. Ice on the puddles and rime on the stones. Watch your step!

Not to mention the frozen leaves.

New leaves to my Blog

About a month ago I posted a picture of an autumn leaf. Today I got a nice comment from Kerri in the US, saying nice things about it. It is always a pleasure to receive such comments, especially since she herself is no mean photographer. So what else could I do then have look around my hard disk for more pictures of autumn leaves. Here are a few of them:

This one must be the ultimate Bergen leaf - wet.

The sun was out for here
Just reminding you that winter is just around the corner.
