Happy New Year!

In November and December the weather has been mostly in monochrome around here. But two days ago we got the whole palette. Let us hope it lasts well into 2014

Dangerous Silver Medal

Just a bit of self-praise: Yesterday I won a silver medal in my Photo club's (Bekkalokkket Fotoklubbs) autumn contest. The theme here was "Humour" ...

The guys fighting it out are members of the medieval re-enactment group "Konghirden 1260".

Christmas Shopping

Christmas shopping in Bergen - before the snow came ...

PS In case you read the post below about Blogger and jpgs: I now use a LightRoom plug-in called Magic Export that allows  export of PNG-files that are not changed by Blooger - yet. However, I may change to WordPress sometime in the future.

Advent at "Bryggen" - and maybe a pause ...

"Bryggen" in Bergen is teeming with tourists during the summer season. But you may find one or two (and maybe some locals) before Christmas too.

PS Blogger has recently started applying an "automatic enhancement" to your pictures when you upload photos (jpgs) from your harddisk. For this they use features in Picasa, even though you don't use Picasa yourself. This can only be turned off if you use Google+.  I had no intention of using Google+ before, and even less now. There are workarounds, in this case saving the file in png-format. Only - I use Adobe Lightroom as my centre for photography; which don't save to that format as far as I can see. So I have to export it to Adobe Photoshop and save it from there. This creates an unnecessary PSD/TIFF file in Lightroom that has to be removed to avoid clutter. So, this blog will probably be quiet while I search for other solutions or other vendors. A pity if I have to close down - I started in 2006 ...

A Touch of Winter

Sunday we got 5 cm of snow combined with a very special light. I felt it was one of those moments of magic.

Radio City

I found this photo while I was searching my hard-disk for something else. I thought it had a certain pre-colour atmosphere, so I converted it to B & W.

Rainy Day Women

We have a had quite a bit of weather here today. Among other things between 50 and 60 mm of rain in six hours (and more later on). And bit of wind too.

We can't compete with the Philippines (and all my heartfelt good wishes to them), but at least the umbrellas and their female carriers had a hard day.

PS Have a nice Week-End!

Autumn in Norway

I haven't shot many "autumn photos" this year. But that can of course be remedied, so here is a few showing that autumn can be wet and fascinating at the same time.

Mist and rain may hide some of the glorious colours we associate with autumn, but they are still there, only a bit of mystery has been added.

The rain may make the ground you walk on sodden and wet, but every small creek literally springs to life.

An incomplete bridge is just plain fun.

Even our local castle gets a veil of mystery and subdued colours.

Visiting Spain

It has been a bit quiet around here lately, once more. But I still have my excuses: I have been busy, and I have been away. This time it has been a strictly family holiday to the Spanish island Grand Canaria, one of The Canary Islands. Therefore 95% of the photos I shot were meant for the family album. But one or two may still have a more general interest.

Here are three very different boats an hour before sunset just outside the gates of "our" apartment.

Not all the people you meet carry cameras - some bring a whole canvas.

Some have found a veranda that suits them just fine.

And some are just hanging around.

And I couldn't resist showing the family's little princess enjoying herself in the sand.

September Road

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,

Pursuing it with weary feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And wither then? I cannot say

Bicycles in Germany

Bicycles seemed to be much used in Germany. This guy in Tauberbischofsheim seemed to have borrowed one from his wife - I sense a story here ...

Many tourists used bikes for transport. This one is entering one of the old gates in Rothenburg.

In Rothenburg bikes of all kinds could be found.

Early morning crossing of the street in Füssen.

I must admit that in this photo from Dinkelsbühl, the bicycles are only an excuse for showing off the car ...

Have a nice week-End!

Visiting Germany

It has been a bit quiet around here lately, but I have my excuses: I have been busy, and I have been away. A friend and I spent a week driving around the southern part of Germany "playing" tourists and snapping away with our cameras. Here are some samples:

This is a Night Train in Wertheim.

An evening after the rain in Miltenberg.

What to Do on a Quiet Evening in Bergen

Maybe a bit of reflection by the side of a reflection

Or a pause from the shopping

Perhaps a bit of hand-in-hand grown-up fun with the stony monument

But someone must keep the city clean

BTW - all photos were shot with a Canon 7D fitted with a Canon EF 28mm/2.8 IS lens. Post-treatment with Adobe Lightroom 5.0

Porthole

In the beginning of August we had a festival for veteran ships in Bergen called "Fjordsteam". It wasn't too easy to get a proper shot of individual ships since they were moored almost on top of each other, so I tried to concentrate on details. This is a shot through the porthole of the pantry of the sloop "Mathilde".

Staircase to Nowhere

I wonder about (at least) two things regarding this subject:

1. How do you get to that staircase at the top of a waterfall?
2. Where does that staircase lead?
One for the birds ...

PS Found at Næs Iron Works Museum outside the town of Tvedestrand in Southern Norway.

A Real Veteran

During the summer the "serious" photographer takes a holiday and the child inside takes over and wants to play - for instance with locomotives. In this case it was the veteran railway Setesdalsbanen outside Kristiansand in the far south of Norway. It was initially opened in 1895 as a narrow gauge (1067mm) railway, but it ceased ordinary operation in 1962. But enthusiasts still operate part of it. And with lots of steam!

And some of it had of course to be shown in proper monochrome :-)

Nothing like well-stoked fire to get the locomotive going

But of course you need an old-fashioned ticket to enter the train. No modern apps here!

And then it is time for departure!

Have a nice Week-End and a fine summer!

The Swan of Summer

My photo club held its last meeting for the spring semester last week-end. It was of course held in appropriate surroundings with lots of fun, food and festivities,  and of course a bit of photography as well. Some of this I'll share with you as a symbol of the approaching summer holidays.

The summer always leads to less blogging for me, so also this year. I'll be mostly here, I but may be a little bit there and everywhere too (according to my personal quantum theory ...). Which of course means that once in a while there will be a post too. So -

Have a nice week-end and a nice summer!

Swing it!

These two guys from Southern America played the streets of Bergen a couple of weeks ago. They told me they were very sorry that their bass was not working properly, so the music was not as fine as it should be. However, it was more than good enough for me!

The guy on vibes made me think of Lionel Hampton (whom I've heard in concert).

And Benny Goodman was not the only one who could play the clarinet!
My feet started tapping.

Have nice Week-End!
