"My" beautiful ship is burning! - Updated

At 09.30 this morning the ship MS Nordlys, belonging to Hurtigruten (The Norwegian Coastal Voyage) caught fire. It happened just outside the city of Aalesund on the western coast of Norway, so that help was close at hand. The passengers were speedily evacuated, bur I'm sorry to have to tell you that two of the crew are dead and about ten are in hospital with fire related injuries. At the moment the fire (in the engine room) is not under full control, but one hopes to have it soon. The local Fire brigade, with reinforcements from other cities, the Navy and Coast Guard are assisting, as well as medical personnel, police etc. The photo above is from NRK (The Norwegian Broadcasting Cooperation), and more can be found here.

I feel I have a personal relationship with this ship: Two and a half months ago we travelled all the way from Bergen to Kirkenes with this ship. We had a wonderful trip aboard a wonderful ship (the photo below was shot at Kirkenes). In addition, it has passed beneath my windows innumerable times. It is a sad day.

Updated! The fire on the ship was luckily extinguished and all the passengers were evacuated without any large problems. However, shortly after the fire the ship developed a bad list to the port side - more than 20 degrees - due to the fire. After extensive work by competent personell, they managed to stabilize the ship. It is at present still in Aalesund awaiting repair.
I hope some day to make another trip.

At the same time I wish to thank you for all the nice comments!

so sad - for some reasons none of your photos are uploading - some kind of server error probably and likely temporary - have seen the photo of the burning ship elsewhere though and I understand how you must be feeling.

Oh Rune, this is terrible!
It is so sad to watch the video of your ship burning, to see people standing on deck, to know firemen died.
The photos of people on the lifeboats are dramatic too. I am so glad you were not one of them, that it did not happen during your cruise.
May it all be under control very soon.
And may you know no more such sad days, dear Rune.

That is truly a tragedy -for you and for anyone who enjoyed/appreciated this beautiful ship.

How very sad and touching. . . I hope they can repair it and that it will soon be back in commission.

I remember your posts about the ship, how very sad. My heart goes out the families of those killed and injured.

Fire at sea (or in tall buildings) is scary! I'm glad the passengers and crew were evacuated safely.

Considering the number of people on board, it could have been much worse.. Boats are not only things. They have a soul, they carry much more than passengers; I'm always sad when I see such a thing happening.

I caught a bit of this on the news yesterday ... so sad ... and even more so when you have a personal connection to the ship.

A fire at sea... what could be worse?

I'm so sorry, Rune. I saw this tragedy on the news two days ago with a follow-up on the recovery again today. A painful event...after your wonderful voyage and the ship's usually healthy presence in your neighborhood.

So much personal involvement with it--must make you feel strange, as well as sad. And a second real tragedy for Norway this summer. I wish you the best.

I remember the wonderful photographs from your trip aboard this ship. It must be like learning that an old friend has been injured. It has made the internet news and I see a photo of it listing at a dangerous angle. So we know of your misfortune as far away as Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Just shocking to see the ship listing, more than the critical 20 degrees (on the Internet news today). They said she is in danger of capsizing.
A passenger from Arkansas was interviewed and she said the evacuation was done calmly and professionally.

It's been great to follow your trip with this ship here on the blog, one trip I myself dream about doing a summer in the coming years! It is dramatic what happened to the ship - and you must feel this strongly when you have recently been sailing with it yourself.

Hun er i gode hender blant Sunnmøringer.

We were so sorry to see this tragedy. Our cruise on the Hurtigruten was one of the most memorable we ever experienced.
I would like to visit you more often but now I find I have two blog lists because I am using my lap-top quite a bit. My other list sends me reminders when a new blog is posted. I guess the truth is that I need to prune my lists! So much interesting reading out there!
