Bergen traffic 1977 - and in 2009

One more dip into the archives. Traffic passing the Fish Marked ("Torget") in Bergen in 1977. Shot with a Mamyia 1000 DTL . The film was Kodak Tri-X. Scanned from the negative.

This is how it looks today (or rather yesterday). Shot with a Canon 40D.

This Monochrome concept came from Aileni at The Monochrome Weekend

Shows a contrast in car styling.

I see lots of contrast in these two photos and I like this slice of the world..so different from mine- Great submission-

I've noticed the contrast in car styles, architecture of the houses are almost the same, road is totally different. I must say that i like the 1977 scene. That was a year after I was born hahahaha.

Thanks for sharing. I've been hearing nice things about Norway and if given a chance, I really want to visit or perhaps stay there. Being a moderator of overseases Filipino Workers Forum, i tend to read all the stories of our members working and living in Norway at present.

A blessed weekend to you.

Neat concept...then and now...nice job!

It does look older.

What a good idea to compare a place through time! I like the 1977 one! Much more cars, strangely, but an other mood, maybe the models of cars or the way people are dressed..I hope you'll go on shwowing such comparisons, I like them!I was too young to have a camera in those times; That's a pity, I would have liked to do the same!

The King of Contrasts!

Flotte bilder!

Hi Rune! Surely the oil made a huge difference... ;))

Blogtrotter has finished Bilbao 2008. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Thanks for a very interesting pictorial history lesson. BTW, Tri-X is still around. I use it in my Holga and Diana clone cameras.

Dina said...

Hey, where did the traffic go?
Nice to have before and now shots.
The asphalt looks smoother but not as picturesque as the old style paving.
Wonder what changes the years to come will bring.

Flotte bilder fra deg i dag også :)

This is strange, I was going to comment on the same thing as Dina...lol
The road did catch my eye more than anything else....
The older one is far more superior..:)

I like the Now and Then photo concepts. I think it's especially interesting for people who are familiar with the area.

I'm enjoying your trip back into the archives.

Thank you for sharing.

Somebody asked me for a photo of a Loon. I looked through my archives to find one. I found one, but it was horrible. At the time I thought it was a great photo. It's interesting how that perspective changes. (Although, it looks as if you have been a great photographer for quite some time.)

Helt otroliga bilder Rune!

Ha en fin helg

And you didn't get hit by a car either time! Very nimble of you. ;)

Seriously, what a difference! Very nice. I personally like the one with cobblestone better, though I am sure the smooth pavement is much more agreeable to traffic.

A great comparison shot.

I always make sure I come and see your blog, and as usual, I have not been disappointed. :)

Happy Holidays!

Vilken vacker kontrast mellan de båda bilderna.

Great comparison! Looks like the people of Bergen have ed to public transportation.

Thanks for the reminder about polarizing filters. I bought one recently and have not yet tried it.

Carolyn Ford said...

Those are very good comparisons! I also am glad you didn't get run over (either time). Those who have lived in this area would really enjoy the nostalgia!

Breathes sigh of relief as she scrolls down to the later picture. I was anticipating much more traffic. Such a comparison here would show gridlock. Even in our small town I run into traffic delays at certain times of day. Even several miles outside of town on country roads if the works shift at one of the larger employers out one road has just ended.

How to decide? I like both images, but the expanded view in the second is my favorite.

Artig!

Julie said...

Far fewer light poles in the 2009 image, Rune, but why oh why did they feel the need to replace the cobbles!

I appreciate the opportunity to ocmpare across time. Thanks for the work in digging it out.

Petunia said...

Stilig!!

Jane said...

Interesting and a lot has changed in those years apart from the cars and the road I think. Thanks for sharing Rune:)

That is a beautiful characteristic town, as I see it. So peaceful and traditional. I love it. Both pictures are amazing.

you live with such wonderful traffic conditions... no signs of over crowded streets at all back in 1977 or 2009

I love the texture of the cobbled road.

That's then and now...but I like the older photo, I wonder what happened to the cobblestones?

Congratulations on the accolade.

I was there in 1975, too bad the older photo wasn't taken from the current vantage point, great to see the mountain or fjord above the town.

Those boxy little cars in photo 1 are a blast from the past. Do you miss them? The mini-Cooper has made tiny chic in the USA! Love both photos.

Robin said...

Nice contrast. I like the old cobblestones but I guess they didn't hold up to modern traffic.

Great shots - I was there in the summer! My partner tried whale meat for the first time.

Bergen is a very beautiful city and I would recommend a visit to anyone (though take PLENTY of money!)

I love the then and now photos to show a comparison in the change of time.

Dragonstar said...

So much contrast with these two shots, including the cameras!
The older photo makes the nicer picture, with all the patterns in the road, but I know I would be uncomfortable driving over those cobblestones. The picturesque has to give way to modern convenience.

Thanks for your very kind comment on mine.

Greyscale Territory said...

Amazing contrast! Like many others, I adore the cobblestones, but traffic seems more chaotic in the older image! I can't believe I am saying that! Maybe the sealed road just gives the illusion of order!

Ken Mac said...

love the cars, and how little it's all changed

Veldig stilige bilder du deler med oss her:)

Amazing - both super shots.

Not the camera or film, but its the Photographer who captured them.

Nifty - and I too was surprised at the less traffic in the more recent photo. Do like the cobblestone paving as well.
