Colour or monochrome?

The photos show a door opening into an old boathouse. Which version do you prefer?

The colour one?

Or the monochrome one?

For the technically interested: The original photo was shot using a Canon 40D with a Sigma 17-70mm lens. The initial RAW-file has not been cropped. The software was Photoshop CS3 with Camera Raw.

I am usually a bigger fan of b/w, but for some reason this one looks better to me in color. I like the rust color of the latch. It brings more depth to the picture and gives a better feel for the "old" nature of it.

Nice shots in both versions though!

I agree with Elizabeth, and for the same reasons. But then, I usually prefer color...

I definitely prefer the colour photograph to the b&w because firstly the difference between the structure of metal and wooden parts is much more prominent in colour and secondly the shades of the brown colour add pleasant warm tinge to the picture.
What do you mean?

Funny that I would I thought I would say go with the b/w but I really like the color image.

Great shot!

I think the monochrome as it gives a more genuine impression.

I like both, I love b/w, but the colour gets my vote for the rust on the lock.

Jeg likte det første fargede best. Det ga mer "dybde". Mer liv og spenning. :)

Color really brings out the grain and the lock. well done

The rust is beautiful in colour and not so nice in B&W. However, I prefer seeing the texture of the wood in B&W.

Both are excellent, though in this case I'm more partial to the color version.

Colors are great on the first photo, no reasons to hide them :)

Tough decision. But the color here is important, IMHO.

Kjempe flott.
Det er enkelt og genialt:)

Like many of the others, I would have expected to prefer the b&w, but actually prefer the colour version. Somehow the desaturation of the image has resulted in it being 'flat' and lacking contrast. Colour wins this contest.

Malyss said...

I prefer B&W.It better matches with the theme of the scene.
The colored one is interesting, I admit, but it's the second one that I would frame on my wall.
And you, Which one do you prefer?...

I'm with the majority here thinking the rust colour makes the image especially telling.

Beautiful shot! I like the colour one better because I like the way the colour of the latch works with the colour in the wood!

Both are really great though. It looks old and weathered which is always a great photo effect!

Surprisingly, the one with color!
