Odd Shot Radio

This is a cropped image of an advertising board found outside a shop in Bergen, Norway. Except for the rather obvious fact that the text is in English and not Norwegian (very common behaviour in advertising circles), one might suggest some reasons for this text:

  • The writer is a fan of Woody Allen's film Radio Days
  • The writer thought the radio was designed for Tolkien's Ents
  • The writer is a fan of Fred Flintstone from Bedrock City ( no, then it would have been called Rocky Radio)
I'm sure that the participants in Odd Shot can think of more convincing explanations.

I've heard the expression "steam radio", but maybe this would be smoke radio ;)

This is just plain weird! I am not sure even just how fully wooden that radio is! An eccentric ornament or a working model?

I wonder why advertising is often written in English. Do most Norwegians read English?

The radio is very beautiful! If it is an old model, it must definitely have been used by the ents in the Lord of the Rings. Besides the advertising is in English and the ents spoke English, the language of Middle Earth. Like you said in your comment: it's old but still useful!
Thank you so much for your comment and visit!!

In France, when politicians say lies or make promises everyone knows they won't be able to make come true, we say that they speak with a "wooden tongue" (langue de bois). So I guess this wonderful radio is made especially for politicians!
But, as it is a too beautyful thing for them, i'd choose the Woody Allen 's version of "Radio Days", which was a marvellous movie.
(A radio is too modern for Tolkien's Ents, and something that goes too fast for them! :-)) )

I think my first radio was also in wood. It was in 1954. Now it is standing as decoration in my son's living room, lol !

That wooden radio is certainly from the Ark.

Synes den var tøff, jeg!
Men spesiell også da. Du er flink til å finne motiver over alt der du ferdes:)
Har noe "odde typer" inne hos meg i dag.

Reminds me of the guy John(?) Harrison that invented a wooden clock for use on board sailing ships because the earth's magnetic fields made mechanical clocks unreliable. It was because of that invention that he was able to plot the lines of longitude that we still use in modern navigation.

But something tells me that once you get its shirt off, this radio is pretty much like any other.

Just a hunch.

I also have a wooden radio cabinet in my home. I have all the tubes and stuff somewhere, too, but not working.

In my day, anything "wooden" meant it wasn't real. As in a "wooden leg" not being a real one.

At first, it looked like a lunch box to me. The two knobs looked like drink holders. Ü If it is a real radio, it is very unusual and kinda pretty. I wish I could ahve seen the whole ad board. . . I tried commenting on this yesterday but my old computer is so slow and your photos so big tht it takes a long time to upload photos so I gave up and went to bed and about 6 hours later, here I am.
