How to take unsuccessful pictures of fireworks

It is really quite easy:

  • Place the camera on a tripod
  • Adjust the settings manually (exposure-time, aperture, focus etc)
  • Lock-up the mirror
  • Set up the cable release
  • Start the exposure
  • See another beautiful rocket
  • Forget that you have started the exposure
  • Move the tripod
That is all there is to it. Now you have a completely wasted picture. Or a piece of abstract art.

...som en meget!!! giftesyk ortoped hos oss sa en gang... etter utallige dater og misslykkede treff som hadde kostet han utallige teaterbilletter, kinobilletter og dyre restaurant måltider...;

What I usualy do is up the ISO to 800 then forget and overexpose pictures the next day.

About your comment about the German eiswine, yes we have Icewine here, the grapes are harvested when the temperature is minus 9c or colder, this happened before Christmas this winter

even the dud shots come in for something - I'm very rarely out in the evening but circumstances found me in town after dark on Saturday. I took two pictures on auto-setting which came out OK (you'll see them on Hyde DP Tuesday). The other taken on a special night setting is rubbish as far as being of what it is supposed to be of but I expect I'll make something artistic of it in due course.

Nice those fireworks that you captured. Sometimes there are some mishaps involved, but make interesting shots anyway! Happy new year!

Finally, a fireworks tutorial that we can all use successfully. :) I think it works fine as abstract art!
