Z is for Zafira in ABC W

This week's Z was an easy one - at least for me. A look in the garage was enough. For those who don't know what it is - it is a car. Known as Opel Zafira. Opel is owned by GM and is their major brand and car manufacturer in Europe. We bought our first Opel in 2000 and have so far seen them in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany (obviously - that is where most of them are made), The Netherlands, France, Spain and Greece.

But not in the UK. There GM has its own subsidiary called Vauxhall. We knew that of course, but when we visited England in 2006 with out brand new car, I couldn't resist taking this shot of ours parked next to a "British" relative outside our hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere. BTW, the last picture was taken by my mobile, a Nokia N70.

Some months later I was in Dublin for a congress and half expected to see Vauxhall there too (they drive on the wrong side of the road there too, don't they?). But, nothing doing - it was Opel again.

I have not checked whether GM sells this car, or a version of it, in other parts of the world. Knowing how the car business operates these days, the probably do, but I don't know any names.
This was the last letter of the alphabet for now (at least the English one). It has been fun while it lasted and all hats off for Mrs. Nesbitt for hosting it and taking all the trouble that goes with it!

I've never heard of a Zaphira, but then I live in Canada, and besides, I know very little about cars!

Yeah, you can find several cars that look the same here in the US but have different names because they are the same company. I love hearing about cars from other countries.

Å for A. Du tok både begynnelsen og slutten i ett jafs! Smart;)

Yes, GM market the Zafira in the UK - but ours is the Vauxhall Zafira. We used to have Opel cars (The Opel Cadet was the forerunner to the Vauxhall Astra)

Good Z choice.

Thanks for visiting Bodge's Bulletin

Bra valg til en egentlig vanskelig bokstav. Jeg fikk nesten ikke med meg de to forrige bokstavene, for jeg har vært borte, så det ble ikke noen kommentater fra meg.. Men nå er jeg tilbake :o)

Did not know that Opel and Vauxhall was the same. I am driving the quality car Toyota RAV4

There certainly used to be Opel cars in the UK.

From what Bodge says it looks like Vauxhall and Opel are now the same company - there have been many mergers in the car industry over the years.

My apologies for sticking in here but I did come to give you this message.

I read the 10 comments people left in response to my thinking I would stop or quit posting on my Better Blog Writing blog. Then I felt bad. So I got some pictures I took this morning and arranged them on Better Blog Writing as a kind of continuation. Take a look and if it is something you can learn from then I will continue.

I'm loving that hotel!

Just goes to show how ignorant I am - I thought GM was only in America (USA and Canada). I own a GM, but it's called a Regal and they don't even make it anymore!

Lucky you with a Z right in your driveway!!

Once upon a time there were only a few auto makers in the USA and every child could recognize every make and model. That "once upon a time" was a looong time ago! Is Zafira the equivalent of English Zephyr?

A nice post and discussion.

I also have not heard of a Zaphira, but then we also don't have Opel cars here in Australia. Our GM manufacturer is GM Holden, who make the Commodore,Astra, & Barina. It is all so-o confusing with so many makes of cars!

Ah, how convenient to have good ole Z right at your nose! Excellent post!!!

What a great Z. And an education about car manufacturers as well! There's no difference in those cars but the badge and the type of number plate.

Mine's up too. Looking forward to A.

Oh yes I know these. Many folk have them here for weekend drives. Very good choice.

We once--quite some years ago--had Opels here in the US. I am old enough to remember them, and my father-in-law owned one for a while. They were never particularly popular here--I don't know why. I think maybe those models were underpowered. It is interesting to know that the brand still exists in other parts of the world.

Great post and choice - Don't think I've seen one in the US.

Nice cars and Zafira is a perfect choice for the ending alphabet letter.

Blue said...

I'd have never have thought of that one, cars & me aren't that close but a good choice.

The Zafira was marketed in Australia under the Holden badge. It was introduced in 2001 and last sold in 2005. Our model was built in Thailand. The car industry certainly is a global one now.

You may remember, I posted ABC Wednesdays - H for Holden

I know a few people who own this model of car. A few years ago Vauxhall ran a special offer campaign! I have had 2 vauxhalls, an astra which was stilen and written off, and a cavalier!

I have never heard of Zaphira but I am not interested in cars anyway. As long as I have a dependable way to go I am happy. And I do so I do not look at cars.

Very interesting Z post--and I do know Opels and remember Vauxhalls too. History repeates itself, yes?
Happy Wednesday!

Paulie said...

Well, I learned a new name today! I guess because I never learned to drive, I don't have much interest in cars BUT I still like the Chevy's they built in the 50's. . .

Thanks for dropping by -- although I am not participating in the next round of this challenge, I will be around to visit your blog.

The Zafira is available in various countries, as others have indicated. GM has plans to build it in the US in 2009. Haven't heard if their recent redirection in the auto market will affect the Zafira. It looks like a more fuel-efficient vehicle, so they may keep it.

Good one - I was a hardened Opel Driver, when living in Germany, so
of course I'm glad to see such a great "Z"! :)

See you at "A"!
Cheers, Klaus
