B is for Bridge in ABC Wednesday

Then we are at the second letter of the third round of Mrs. Nesbitt's ABC Wednesday. The meme has now got its own site where you will find both a short version of this entry and many others.

For those who have followed my blog, it might not come as a surprise that I have chosen BRIDGE as the Word of the Day. Wikipedia says it like this:

A bridge is a structure built to span a gorge, valley, road, railroad track, river, body of water, or any other physical obstacle, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. Designs of bridges will vary depending on the function of the bridge and the nature of the terrain where the bridge is to be constructed.
The bridge shown here is "my bridge" (I live near the top of the hill to the right of the bridge). It is better known as "Sotrabroen" (The Sotra bridge). The bridge spans the fjord of "Vatlestraumen" between the municipality of Fjell and the city of Bergen.

Here is another view taken from the top of the mountain Lyderhorn

This sign is placed on the island side of the sound. It states among other things that the bridge was opened in 1971, is 1236 m long and that the maximum height for the ships passing beneath is 50 m.

However, the capacity of the bridge is now too low, and there is at present a discussion going whether one shall build another four-lane bridge close by the present one or make two two-lane tunnels beneath the fjord.

In any case, what is better than showing Norway's largest sailing vessel "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" beneath the bridge?

PS At the same time I will put out a gentle reminder that the coming Monday, August 4, will be the next day for the Bridge-project.

As usual, the rules are here

How very different our bridges are?
I'd love to see yours as much as you'd like to visit my city.

what an amazing view - so hilly, so green, the houses look like little boxes - it does remind me very much of where i was born (wellington new zealand), quite unlike to where i live now (hania, greece)

great post as I'd expect - love the yacht under the bridge - reminds me of my last bridge post on AB - next one on AB is prepared (very different) - local one for HDP is not taken yet - got an idea but I have to find the time to actually go and photograph it.

Interesting post...
And with all of that water, you certainly need a lot of bridges...
Best regards, Don.

The scene from above is gorgeous.
Quite a problem when bridges get too low, I see.
Strange to see the Statsraad Lehmkuhl from that angle and with her sails furled. Quite dramatic. How tall is the mast? (Well, I guess less than 50 meters. Couldn't find the height in the ship's website.) Thanks for these exciting pictures.

Fantastisk bilde!

Terrific pictures! I would always stick to a bridge if given the choice of that or a tunnel under the water!
