N is for "N 28/11"

I have a suspicion that I will be the only one with this solution to what N might be. Even I do not know, but I'll show you the pictures and maybe come with some suggestions.

This is close-up of a stone in which someone at one time scratched "N 28/11". To me it looks obviously like a date. Maybe N (again obviously not Kilroy) was here on November 11 of some unspecified year? Some old time graffiti? Maybe a boy declared his love to a girl with a name starting with N?

In any case - where is this stone?

The stone is part of a wall. Maybe the wall was finished by N on November 11? In that case the building should be pretty young, for the surface of the scratch looks fairly new to me. Much less weathered than the rest of the stone. Here is the building:

This is as you can see, obviously not a new construction. It is located on an old quay where the the local traffic ended in 1971. It may have been connected with that or with nearby local industry. Today it is some kind of workshop.

So it is probably just some schoolboy with too much time on his hands or too little paper in his bag. However, since we'll never get the whole solution - it is up to us to invent one...

PS For more about ABC Wednesday, please visit Mrs. Nesbitt's Place. It is well worth the effort.

Maybe someone fall in love there? Or somebody was bored. But the photos is very nice and it's fun to think of what it is:)

Have fun:)

Bingo?

Number 11 in an edition of 28?

A secret code for martians, telling them to land in November 2811?

:-)

A mystery! It could be anything, a romance, a finish date, a weight maybe? Good one.

All I remember from calculus is how to solve for "X", not "N" - sorry. :)

And the "inscription" is too new looking to be November 28, 1911? I love a mystery.

Challenging story.
November 28th? Day 333rd in leap years!
with 33 days remaining in the year.
Believe you know the story behind 666 etc.
and the N?

great choice. This is my explanation. N=north 28= stone no in horizontal 11= stone no in vertical ha, ha it's a crazy idea. More possible I think is the expl. of detroit dog. any way, great texture

How fascinating! There is so much to learn out there.

Do check my Monday post. "Going Down" David awarded me joint "Post of the Day" award.
Great to have you back.

You drive me nuts with this mystery! ;) LOL!
And we`ll never know the answer...... ;)

It might be some math formula for something. Nice look at the building too.

What about the bible, something like numbers? No,haven't a clue just threw that one in there. Another inspired choice for N,

Interesting detective work and conjecture. I never have liked the "11" in a date for obvious reasons of 9/11, so I'll bow out on this imaginative game.

Realy funny N!
Why did you picture it????

That's a mystery, but a beautiful photo!

Do not have this no idea the hour, but I like the photographs and generally post!

Hmm... that is a mystery but a fun post and an awesome building!!

Just to clarify my photo on my ABC post, it was not stitched together with more than one photo, just a regular shot that I got lucky from my point and shoot camera!
Thanks for dropping by, I appreciate it.

On Google France, 28/11 takes you to the Bulletin Officiel (official "journal") :-)) Not romantic at all. I like your "version" better.

What a fancy !
Perhaps it was the date for the next break or manif (in the past, of course) ?
Anyhow, it's a nice picture!
I'll write something about the "ceremonial boat" later

Fascinating!
A delightful post and use of "n"--thanks for sharing.

Hmmm... curious... could it be a reference to a certain paragraph of Bible? ... I don't think so! :) Anyway, this is a very interesting "N" post! Thank you!

It is a Norwegian Kilroy.

As the only stone thus marked I'd suggest it is graffiti and 28/11 is the 28th November not the 11th of anything (Americans with their inverted dates and driving on the wrong side do confuse us)

Very interesting about the stone, and backgrounds, and great photographical work I am really impressed:)

Thanks for showing your N for ABC, My N stands for "nothing here" Visit me at : www.joannwalraven.blogspot.com

Like Evlahos, I though of a geographic point. N could stand for north, but we don't know if the other number is east or west. Either way it would take us on an African safari. Thanks for visiting my nummies post. - Margy

Oh what a mystery. The stone wall on the building is very cool. Love the photos...

Old Wom Tigley said...

The wall is very very old, but the motar looks to have been redone. Maybe when pointing the joints... the chap was paid by the sq.mtr. and was working out his wages.. or more like he was just leaving his mark.. A great N to ponder on.. :O)

leslie said...

Maybe it's a birth date - Nov. 28, 1911? Regardless, good one for today! :D

Jan said...

Love your shots, I've no idea on how to solve the mystery. My vote is for a date, Nov. 28. 1911, perhaps a birthday

GAWO said...

Gordon said...

I have no ideas about the N 28/11, but i love the photos and your technique - zooming out too reveal a nice old building.

Dirty Knees said...

HMMMM.

Vote no on 28/11?

Norman was here 28/11?

North, 28 degrees, 11 seconds?

Never, 11 of 28 times?

Who knows, but it's sure fun to wonder abut!

John said...

Mange gode forslag her ser jeg.

AVCR8TEUR said...

You have a good eye spotting that scribble amongst the stones. It could be a clue to buried treasure? Or, N is the 14th letter so it's November 28, 1914? Or, that particular stone belongs on the North side of the building, 28th column, row 11.

Diana said...

that's a good mystery. wish we could really find the true answer.

Nydia said...

Oh, my... the many things it can be... On November 28th, someone wanted to leave for posterity that he or she was there... Maybe this place was where an important thought came to his/her mind... Mybe he/she decided to chage his/her life from that day on... Who knows? This is a fun mistery, Runee! Great choice! Thanks for your sweet and wise comment on my Nature post. Kisses from Nydia.

Super N post. I think it's going to remain a mystery unless whoever did it happens to see your blog and comments an explanation for all of us.

It seems to me it's not easy to scratch something in to this rock, it is a mystery.

Maybe someone was doing some calculations? Anyway, it is quite the mystery.

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier this week. And, Nascar is stock car racing. Along the same lines as Formula One racing, but with a different type of car, and Nascar goes in an oval, and is not open car.

Sorry I'm so late getting around! This is definitely a curiosity but I like it very much. The building is beautiful.
