F = FJORD

According to Answer.com's Dictionary, a FJORD can be defined as:

A long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between steep slopes.

[Norwegian, from Old Norse fjördhr.]

The one below should fit that description fine.

The picture is from Sørfjorden, a side arm to Hardagerfjorden in Norway. We are at Lofthus, in Ullensvang, looking straight south towards Odda. The snow on the mountaintops to the right is the glacier Folgefonna.

I once had the chance to spend a little time aboard the ketch ("galleas - Hardangerjekt") "Loyal", seen to the left in the picture. As you can see for yourself, it is a beautiful sailing vessel - in fact, it is the sister ship of "Gjøa" that Roald Amundsen used to discover the North-West Passage. It was originally built in 1877 in Rosendal in Hardanger, but has recently been fully restored.

The ship "Loyal" also has its own website.

Do you want to see more fjords? Just look at the top of my Blog - there you can see several of them. It is my daily view.

PS I am rather busy at the moment, so it may be a little while before I can return any visits - but I will!

I had a feeling we'd see at least one fjord from our many Norwegian blogging friends - that is certainly a beautiful one. I love old ships as well. Nothing quite like being under full sail with no modern engines.

This is a very pretty picture and the ship is indeed wonderful. Thanks for sharing the interesting info. I would love to see it myself!

The water looks like glass. I've been to Misty Fjords in Alaska and I thought it was one of the most beautiful places on earth. After seeing your photo, I think it now has some competition.

Fantastic.
Norwegian fjords were the very first thing we studied in Geography classes @ school, I've been fascinated ever since.

I have ALWAYS (or so it seems) wanted to visit Norway. What a beautiful corner of the world!

Great F post for you. I taught in a northern wilderness area of BC for a year that had been settled by Norwegians over a hundred years ago! The area reminded them of Norway with its own fjords, although we don't call them that.

Beautiful image. Whenever anyone mentions Norway, I immediately think of fjords. Happy ABC Wednesday!

I've not had the privilege of visiting the fjords of Norway, but got a hint of what they might be like by seeing some of the ones in Alaska.

I am remided of a character in one of the books in Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series whose name was Slartybartfast. (I think I remember the name particularly because we gave that name to a cat.) The character was part of the team which had designed the landforms of the earth. He told the main character something like this: I was in charge of fjords. I got an award for Norway.
