E is for the Eiffel Tower

I am sure that I'm not the only one with Eiffel as a choice for an E in this week's ABC Wednesday, but at least it is my view of the tower. We will start with the ordinary post-card view taken from Place du Trocadero across la Seine.

Then a few facts:

  • Builder: Gustave Eiffel
  • Architect: Stephen Sauvestre
  • Raised: March 31, 1889
  • Height: 324 meters
  • Weight: 10.100 tons
  • Number of steps 1665 (not counted by me...)
Of course, the tower can be viewed in a variety of ways: Here is one taken when lying flat on my back on the lawn beside the tower:

When we have got so far, we have of course to get up to the top. After a bit of waiting at one of the feet, we enter a double-decked lift which takes us up to Deck No. 2. From there it is a single lift to the top. That of course means more waiting - but it is worth it. If you take a look at the video, you will get a feeling of how it is to take two lifts in succession 300 meters up into the sky.

And when you have finally arrived - this is some of the view that awaits you:

Next stop - your travel agent.

Wonderful choice for "E". Having never been this is one I could not do - yet! Hopefully someday. Paris is on my list, but not on the top of the list (not even my first choice in France - I prefer the older medieval France of the Dordogne). :)

What an amazing view from the top. Fantastic choice for the letter E.

It's always easier to get up there when you're a tourist. I lived for years quite near the tower before I finally visited it with a tourist. You brought me good memories.

Well this wasn't the E I expected from you, but its an excellent one - I watched the video and must admit that I really don't care for lifts with open views, they do make me feel a little queasy - but the views from the top are marvellous - it isn't the actually height that bothers me, just the rapid ascent/descent.

Beautiful! That last shot is breathtaking!

Absolutely stunning! The clouds behind it really emphasize the tower. A passerby once told me if I wanted to really get a great photo of a statue of the founding father of our city, I should lie on my back to take it without all the background buildings. He was so right! Good for you for doing that too!!!!!!! Excellent post!

WOW that is a great view!

Great video- was that a fly taking the list, too?

Great post- thank you for visiting my ABC!

I am not sure I could do it. I do go to the top of things, then stand back and won't go near the edge. The things I go to the top of must have substantial "Looking" stuff under my feet. I know the Eiffel Tower has stood for well over a century without threat of falling, leaning, or taking off for space. But...

I'm a bit dizzy here, let me sit down--on the ground.

Beautiful views. When I was in Paris, I was quite disappointed that I didn't have time to go up to the top because the lines were too long. So, thank you for your video. Although I was happy to had a chance to eat at the restaurant.

Great post Rune. We've all done that lying on the lawn to get a shot of the Eiffel Tower. I liked your final sentence - it fits with the good job you've done to persuade us to go there :)

Yours is the only Eiffel tower I have seen so far...I am late making my ABC rounds...I went to Paris in March of 2004 and I had NO camera. This was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Nicely done....you take wonderful photographs. A very good perspective.

Suzi-k said...

no kidding about the travel agent, I had itchy feet before, but now i HAVE TO make a plan about getting there asap!! Wonderful shots, the view from the top is breathtaking! Glad i am not the only one who lies on the ground in public places to get the interesting angle, LOL, much to the embarrassment of my family! (see the second pic on my lighthouse post on the St Francis blog... http://stfrancisdailyphoto.blogspot.com/2008/02/looking-up.html )
