I have dedicated this Blog to pictures from Norway. So what is the former British king, Edvard VII doing here?
Firstly, I have just returned from a trip to Aberdeen, where this statue is prominently situated along Union Street, the main street in Aberdeen.
Secondly, king Edvard VII played a crucial role in Norwegian history a hundred years ago during the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden. He was the father of the future queen Maud of Norway. He very much wanted to place her husband, the Danish prince Carl (later king Haakon VII) on the Norwegian throne. To this end he used his own diplomatic channels, often in direct conflict with the established British foreign office policy. And he got his way. He is the great-grandfather of the present Norwegin King, Harald V.
And, thirdy, I liked the picture.
